Volunteer Orientation

Not sure about volunteering? At the Volunteer orientation, we will explain the positions, give a tour of our building, and discover the perfect position for you.

Already a Volunteer? You can help others find a position, share your experiences, or train new volunteers.

All positions described below require a careful and mindful approach. We are handling irreplaceable objects and files that need to remain cared for and organized.

Position descriptions:

Front desk manager/ Museum Hospitality:

The front desk manager would greet guests and show them around the museum, or help them find information by finding files, books, or photos. They would also sell books with the IPad using Square (or handle cash), answer phone calls, take messages, record research requests, and check in any business/service people.

Inventory manager:

When we add an item to our collection, it needs to be added to the inventory lists on an EXCEL spreadsheet. This list constantly needs updates and reorganization. This position would also help with storing the items in boxes in our archives.

Researcher:

Community members often send us Research Requests that require a quick response. This involves searching through files, biographies, books, microfilm, and photos to piece together the information for the client. (It makes you feel like Scooby-Doo!)

Housekeeper:

This position would help us dust, vacuum, clean bathrooms, and take out trash/ recycling.

Special interest positions:

Something that may be a hobby to you, could be very valuable to us! These positions are available at the Carlton County Fair as well as here in our building. Your unique knowledge of a subject could be just what we need to identify objects or photos.

Examples:

Sewing labels on clothing

Photographer for local areas, streets, events, the fair, local barns, and more. Important for documenting the past and present!

Woodcarving, knitting, or playing an instrument at the fair.
