We are beginning our first Affinity Group on the topic of women’s history in Carlton County. There is also strong interest in a women veterans affinity group. And the possibilities for more affinity groups are only limited by your imagination.
It is a casual group of people who share a common history interest. It can be any size. The groups might have social, volunteer, or research interests.
Affinity groups have the potential to expand our knowledge of local history. A few examples could include:
A Potlatch history group. We have a large collection of documents from Potlatch and need help understanding what they tell us.
A historic clothing and textiles group to give us more information about the age, construction, and style of garments in our collection.
An agricultural history group. Meet at our machinery building at the fairground and tell us more about the tools and equipment stored there.
A typewriter affinity group to maintain our collection of 22 manual typewriters and think of fun ways to engage the community in using them.
A party planning Affinity Group to help us plan CCHS’s first annual “Get Cranky Homemade Ice Cream Social” in July, and other events.
Ability to explore our collections and archives
Space to meet at CCHS
Use of our copier, a laptop, and office supplies
Use of our tax-exempt status for purchases related to your group’s study of history
Storage space for any projects you have in the works
Free coffee!
We ask that all affinity group members be up-to-date members of CCHS.
Please contact CCHS if you have an idea for an affinity group!

This group is the first of many. It began in March of 2024 where guests met and told stories about local historic and present women who made an impact on the community.
If you have a story or would like to research these stories, please contact CCHS to get involved.
Help us look through a collection of documents and photos from Potlatch and Northwest Paper to determine what they are and how they contribute to the history of Carlton County. If you have any knowledge of the companies or the wood product industries, we need your help!
This group is being led by our board member Kevin Allen.
How was clothing made before sewing machines became practical and affordable? How were seams finished before the zig-zag stitch was invented? How were garments fastened before the zipper was invented?
Join this affinity group to discuss historical clothing and sewing techniques and help us identify and date historical clothing in our collection.
This group is being led by our director, Carol Klitzke.
One of our volunteers has a strong interest in Women veterans in Carlton County but she needs backup! Contact us and join the affinity group to join in!
